Tornado Tips

It takes less than 15 minutes to go from blue skies to funnel clouds, so be prepared.

Know the difference between a watch and a warning.
  • Tornado watch: Weather conditions are prime for a tornado.
  • Tornado warning: A funnel cloud has been spotted – take shelter immediately.

The safest place to be during a tornado is underground.
  • Go to the basement or cellar.
  • If you do not have a basement, go to the lowest level of your house.

Flying debris causes the most damage during a tornado.
  • Stay in an inside room (bathroom, closet).
  • Stay away from windows.
  • Cover your head.
  • If possible, get under heavy furniture/mattresses.

Automobiles provide no shelter in a tornado.
  • Get out of the car and find a low area to lie in.
  • Cover your head and neck with your hands.

Never stay in a mobile home during a tornado.
  • Make plans to go somewhere else if a tornado occurs.
  • As a last resort, lie down outside in low area, covering your head.
